How to Make Your Apartment Work for Studying AND Living

September 9th, 2026

When your apartment is where you sleep, eat, relax, hang out with friends and get through a semester’s worth of studying, it can be hard to keep school from taking over your entire space.

The good news? You don’t need a dedicated home office to make it work.

At The Parks, your apartment can be a comfortable place to come home to while still giving you the space and flexibility you need to stay productive. Here are a few ways to create a better balance between studying and actually enjoying where you live.

1. Give Studying a Designated Spot

You might not have an entire room to dedicate to schoolwork, but even a small designated study area can make a difference.

Set up a desk in your bedroom, use part of your dining area, or create a small workspace near a window. Keeping your laptop, notebooks and school supplies in one place makes it easier to get into study mode – and, just as importantly, step away from it when you’re done.

Try to avoid making your bed your main study spot. Your future self will appreciate having somewhere that still feels like a place to relax.

2. Take Advantage of Spaces Outside Your Suite

Some days, studying at home just isn’t happening.

One of the benefits of living at The Parks is having additional spaces within the building where you can switch things up. The co-working and social lounge gives you another option when you need to focus, work on a group project or simply get out of your suite without having to head across the city.

A change of scenery can go a long way when you’ve been staring at the same assignment for hours.

3. Keep Your School Stuff From Taking Over

Nothing makes an apartment feel smaller faster than textbooks, chargers, backpacks and loose papers covering every available surface.

Use baskets, drawers, shelving or under-bed storage to give everything a home. At the end of a study session, take a couple of minutes to put your school supplies away.

It’s a small habit, but it helps create a clearer divide between school time and your time.

4. Make Room for Your Roommate

Sharing an apartment can be a great way to make renting more affordable, but it also means figuring out how two or three different schedules work under one roof.

If you live with roommates, talk about what everyone needs to study comfortably. Maybe one person prefers working in their bedroom while another takes the living room. Maybe the co-working lounge becomes the go-to spot during exam season.

With two- and three-bedroom suites available at The Parks, there’s room to create a setup that works for everyone – without your shared living space permanently becoming a study hall.

5. Give Yourself Somewhere to Actually Unwind

Your apartment shouldn’t feel like an extension of campus.

Once the laptop closes, having somewhere else to go can help you mentally clock out. Head up to the 36th-floor Rooftop Lounge, make dinner with friends in the chef’s kitchen, fit in a workout at the Wellness Studio, or simply settle in at home for the night.

Building downtime into your routine isn’t wasted time. It’s part of making your apartment feel like home instead of somewhere you just sleep between classes.

6. Make Your Commute Work for You, Too

A good study-life balance isn’t only about what happens inside your apartment. Where you live matters, too.

The Parks puts students close to some of Edmonton’s major post-secondary campuses. MacEwan University and NorQuest College are within walking distance, while the LRT makes getting to the University of Alberta easy.

Less time spent commuting means more time for studying, working, seeing friends, or doing absolutely nothing for a while.

Find Your Space at The Parks

Student life comes with enough to juggle. Your apartment should make things easier.

With modern suites, dedicated co-working space, amenities that give you somewhere to recharge, and a downtown location close to Edmonton’s major campuses, The Parks gives you room for both sides of student life – the productive one and the one that starts when the studying is finally done.
